Helvetica

By in Boot Camp

The movie Helvetica gives an interesting look into the design world and the conflicting opinions of many of today’s most prominent designers. The take-home message is that this typeface is ubiquitous. Whether loved or abhorred, everyone recognizes Helvetica and its prominence in the designed world.

The two major opinions are as follows:
Helvetica is over-used, redundant, uninspired, etc.

“Don’t confuse legibility with communication. Just because something is legible doesn’t mean it communicates and, more importantly, doesn’t mean it communicates the right thing.” -David Carson

Helvetica is the perfect typeface, the answer to just about every design problem.

And Helvetica maybe says everything, and that’s perhaps part of its appeal.” – Jonathan Hoefler

There is no right or wrong answer, but an important message to take from the film is,

“I’m very much a word person, so that’s why typography for me is the obvious extension. It just makes my words visible.” – Erik Spiekermann

Design Day #3 – Color

By in Boot Camp

Original painting, by Roy Lichtenstein

I created this image to show the Bezold Effect, although what it ends up demonstrating is the contrast between a black background vs. white.

By decreasing the saturation, the effect of the black vs. white can be seen more clearly.

I played around with the hues to create a monochromatic piece. Making these adjustments also inverted the image.

I then adjusted the saturation in order to highlight the contrast in the image, but it actually lessened the contrast in the image.

Further lowering the saturation lessened the contrast even more.

This is the original image, created to show the reversed ground effect. Note that the "X" on the left is more pronounced and looks to be a more pure Pink color.

I lowered the color saturation to create a greyscale version of the original. This shows the contrast of the two main colors, Green and Orange, and also emphasizes the reversed ground effect. The "X" on the left panel is much more defined.

Sucky website
This site is crazy!  I’m not really sure where to look, where to click, or what the heck is going on.

Rad website
This portfolio site really gives a sense of who the authoris and what he does.  It is clean, straight forward, and fun.  I really like that when you click on each link on the left, the work is presented on the right in the same page.  This allows the reader to view the author’s work quickly and smoothly.
